Loveless FM + The Beautiful Noise Broadcast

Jul 9, 2010

BNB'ers,

While Nina Grey was in New York, I drove up to San Francisco for the 4th of July weekend to ironically DJ the 2nd set of Los Angeles Electric. On the way back, instead of taking the 101 with a normal pit stop in San Luis Obispo, or even faster the 5 through the desert, I decided for the first time in my many many travels to and from LA, to take the Pacific Highway 1. So from Ocean Beach, San Francisco to Santa Monica, Los Angeles, I drove 10 hours up and down winding roads that hugged the sides of the cliffs of the Pacific Ocean.

The part that was like a suckerpunch to my heart and head was Big Sur, which is roughly south of the town called Carmel By the Sea and north of San Simeon. I haven't been on such high heights since my travels through the 101 in Oregon in 2008. Its spectacular and scary and beautiful and haunting, and all of these fantastic and terrifying adjectives rolled into one massive package of mind melting bliss. I drove with my head reeling over hundreds of feet below me, while passing through two towns (Lucia and Gorda) which were literally ONE cabin/house that served as an entire town. Gas in Gorda was 3 dollars above the national gas price ($6.00 a gallon for cheapest, $8.00 for premium, the guy before me paid $120.00 to fill up his tank) which paid for the expensive generator that keeps the towns electricity alive. Needless to say since my car was about to run out, I was glad to pay anything. Past Big Sur lies some brilliantly eccentric sleepy little towns on the coast called Cayucos and Morro Bay (which held a massive rock on the shore of one of the towns which laid like a beautiful sore thumb on the beach).

Through all of this I had played this massive playlist that I had prepared for the journey, and while driving up and over and around the landscape, I began to think of how much better the Beautiful Noise Broadcast would sound with better driving tunes that honed on that ethereal travel scape tunes. So this whole show is filled with some of the songs I listened to on my drive through Big Sur, and what better name for the show than the area itself? This set hones in on beautiful glitch, mind numbingly romantic mixes, and interludes of sweet airy organic downtempo and indie.
