Loveless FM + The Beautiful Noise Broadcast

Jun 25, 2010

Beautiful Noise Broadcasters,

I'm back from Georgia, but still on a nostalgic kick. This time I'm honing in on those smooth heart beating 90's ambient house, trip hop, and emotional electronic tracks that got me through my years in Georgia. This whole set is focused around the tracks I used to listen to in my bedroom. I grew up in Marietta, which throughout the years has seen Atlanta wash its metropolitan hands over it. I grew up off of Johnson's Ferry Road, which when we moved in the 80's to there, was a two lane dirt road that had been recently paved over. I watched my small town turn into a small suburb, and further into a metro Atlanta area without ever leaving my house.

From my window, I faced south towards Atlanta which laid 45 miles from me. From my window was a hill that led up to an empty darkness of deep thick forests underneath a vibrating star clustered sky. From the bottom of the hill looking upwards, when I was a child, you could see this faint miniscule glow that highlighted a thin line around the silhouette of the forest. As I got older, the glow grew ever so slowly, but brighter and brighter it grew as Atlanta expanded. From my suburban window, I'd sit on the edge of the sill, with my feet dangling out 30 feet above the ground, and play music from my stereo.

When I'd be out there, watching the glow, I would imagine myself living in the city away from my current home. In my town people just didn't get me. I always had a hard time being understood, so when I dreamt of the city, I dreamt of people understanding me. I dreamt of helicopter sounds, cars honking, and people by the droves walking around and talking. I dreamt of lazy days in the cafe at day, and sweet warm nights in the bars and clubs. I dreamt of the busy lights bustling and blurring around me in this overwhelming halcyonic haze to the point cataclysmic explosion of bliss. And all that would be left were the end credits of my life story rolling to the end of my mortal film.

These are the tracks for those moments. These tracks were what I listened to at night dreaming of the city, and the future possibilities of metropolitan romance. Funny, that I later moved to Atlanta, and then beyond to other larger cities I never thought imaginable, and here I am... surrounded by the honking of cars, helicopter whirls, and bustling of people in downtown Hollywood. Even though I am used to city life after being a decade and a half living in it, my country suburban heart never, for once takes for granted the beauty of the downtown hustle.

So here is to those memories of small town dreaming for a big city life.
